Abstract

The essence of mathematics means explaining what mathematics really is in terms of the meaning of the word mathematics and the characteristics of mathematics. This research is descriptive qualitative research with data collection methods in the form of interviews with mathematics teachers, direct observation in the school environment and literature study. The aim of this research is to find out problems related to the nature of mathematics at MTs Bustanul Ulum Kalirejo. According to the results of interviews with mathematics teachers, it is known that students' understanding of mathematical concepts is still weak, there are still teachers who have difficulty implementing the independent curriculum, there is a lack of advice and infrastructure from schools to improve the quality of learning, and students think mathematics is a difficult and scary subject. The solution offered to this problem is by implementing contextual learning such as situation-based learning, training for teachers, utilizing technological advances, and strengthening coordination with students' parents to help monitor student progress at home
