Abstract

The Lampung language represents a vital cultural identity for the indigenous people of Lampung. However, in multicultural regions such as Pringsewu Regency, its existence is under serious threat due to the dominance of migrant languages such as Javanese, Sundanese, and Semendo. This article examines language maintenance strategies for Lampung in a heterogeneous society by adapting findings from a geolinguistic study conducted in five pekon (villages) in Pringsewu Regency. The research identified 128 lexical and phonological variations resulting from internal innovations, language contact, and subdialectal differences between the Pepadun and Saibatin groups. These changes reflect an ongoing language shift and highlight the potential for language endangerment if not addressed promptly. To respond to these challenges, five key strategies are proposed: (1) strengthening Lampung language teaching in schools through communicative approaches, (2) digitalizing and documenting the language via social media and online applications, (3) involving indigenous communities in culturally embedded language practices, (4) systematically mapping and visualizing language variation, and (5) implementing inclusive multicultural policies by local governments. These strategies aim to ensure the continuity of the Lampung language as a cultural heritage amid ongoing social and linguistic dynamics. Language maintenance involves not only linguistic aspects but also connections to identity, education, and the sustainability of local culture. This article offers both conceptual and practical contributions to the preservation of regional languages in areas facing complex demographic and sociolinguistic challenges.
