Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

SMART: Journal of English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics

SMART is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by LPPM Universitas Muhammadiyah Pringsewu Lampung. The journal publishes original research articles and conceptual papers in the fields of English Language Teaching (ELT) and Applied Linguistics.

The journal is committed to maintaining academic integrity, methodological rigor, and scholarly contribution at both national and international levels.

1. Publication Schedule

SMART publishes two issues annually:

January Issue

  • Submission Period: July – October (preceding year)
  • Review & Revision: September – November
  • Final Acceptance & Production: December

August Issue

  • Submission Period: February – May
  • Review & Revision: April – June
  • Final Acceptance & Production: July

This structured schedule ensures systematic editorial management and timely publication.

 

2. Scope of the Journal

SMART welcomes manuscripts in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • English for Specific Purposes (ESP)

  • Teaching English to Young Learners

Manuscripts must demonstrate originality, theoretical contribution, or empirical relevance.

 

3. Manuscript Preparation

General Formatting

Manuscripts must meet the following requirements:

  • Written in clear academic English
  • Essay format
  • Times New Roman, size 12
  • 5 line spacing
  • A4 paper size
  • 5 cm margins on all sides
  • Submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc, .docx, or .rtf)

 

Manuscript Structure

The manuscript must be arranged in the following order:

  • Title
  • Author Name(s)
  • Affiliation(s)
  • Corresponding Author Email
  • Abstract
  • Keywords
  • Introduction
  • Method
  • Findings and Discussion
  • Conclusion
  • References
  • Appendix (if applicable)

 

Title

  • Maximum 15 words
  • Times New Roman, size 14
  • Bold
  • Centered

 

Abstract

  • Maximum 100 words
  • Single paragraph
  • Must include: purpose, method, and main findings

 

Keywords

  • 3–5 keywords
  • Written in italic
  • Separated by commas
  • Placed below the abstract

 

4. Citations and References

All manuscripts must follow APA Style (7th Edition) for in-text citations and reference lists.

Authors are strongly encouraged to use reference management software such as:

  • Zotero
  • Mendeley
  • EndNote

All references cited in the text must appear in the reference list and vice versa.

 

5. Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts must be submitted through the SMART Online Journal System (OJS):

https://ejournal.umpri.ac.id/index.php/smart/user/register

Authors must register before submission and select the “Author” role. Authors may monitor the progress of their submission through their OJS account.

 

6. Peer Review Process

All submissions undergo:

  1. Initial editorial screening
  2. Double-blind peer review

During the review process:

  • Author identities are concealed from reviewers
  • Reviewer identities are concealed from authors

Editorial decisions include:

  • Accept Submission
  • Revisions Required
  • Decline Submission

A decision of “Revisions Required” does not guarantee acceptance. Final acceptance depends on satisfactory revision and editorial approval.

 

7. Author Fees

Article Publication Fee

IDR 500,000

The fee is payable only after the manuscript has been accepted and has officially entered the production stage.

A Letter of Acceptance (LOA) will be issued once the article proceeds to production. The LOA will include payment details.

Fast Track Option

Authors may request expedited review through the Fast Track service with an additional fee of IDR 1,000,000.

Fast Track prioritizes the review process but does not guarantee acceptance.

 

8. Publication Ethics

SMART upholds high standards of publication ethics in accordance with internationally recognized academic integrity principles.

Authors must ensure that:

  • The manuscript is original.
  • The manuscript is not under review elsewhere.
  • All sources are properly cited.
  • All co-authors approve the submission.
  • There is no data fabrication, falsification, or duplicate publication.

 

9. Plagiarism Policy

All manuscripts are screened using plagiarism detection software.

  • Manuscripts must comply with the similarity threshold determined by the editorial board.
  • Significant plagiarism will result in immediate rejection.
  • If plagiarism is discovered after publication, the journal reserves the right to retract the article.

 

10. Generative AI Policy

SMART permits limited use of AI-assisted tools under strict conditions.

Acceptable Use

  • Language editing
  • Grammar improvement
  • Formatting assistance
  • Reference organization

Unacceptable Use

  • Generating research content without human oversight
  • Fabricating data
  • Replacing intellectual analysis

If AI tools are used, authors must disclose this before the References section.

Authors remain fully responsible for the integrity and originality of their work.

 

11. Editorial Rights

The Editorial Board reserves the right to edit accepted manuscripts for clarity, formatting, and consistency without altering the substance of the work.

The Editorial Board also reserves the right to reject manuscripts at any stage of the review process.

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
