Abstract

Nowadays, the government is attempting to develop students' problem-solving skills through integrating numeracy as one of the major competencies evaluated through national assessments. Numeracy is the capability to think logically using various mathematical concepts, procedures, facts, and tools in solving problems. This is a descriptive qualitative study to describe the numeracy problem solving ability of junior high school students in the context mathematical ability. Three female students in the 8th-grade of SMP Negeri 6 Surabaya were selected as subjects. The data were collected through three ways, (1) math ability test, (2) numeracy test, and (3) interview. Meanwhile, the results were analyzed according to Polya's problem solving stages. The results of the analysis showed that students with high mathematics capability could perform all stages of numeracy problem solving coherently. However, students with medium and low mathematics capability were unable to write some information on the numeracy test and implement the planned strategy coherently. This study is expected to contribute to the development of learning strategies that involve the problem-solving process, specifically on numeracy problems that exist in everyday life.
