Abstract

This study examined the impact of AI-assisted speaking practice on EFL students’ speaking fluency and confidence at Universitas Muhammadiyah Lampung. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design involved 80 third-semester English Education students. The experimental group received eight weeks of AI-assisted speaking practice using ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live. Results indicated significant improvements in speaking fluency (t = 7.044, p < 0.001) and speaking confidence (t = 7.710, p < 0.001), with very large effect sizes (d = 2.91 and 3.82, respectively). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of AI-assisted speaking practice in enhancing EFL students’ fluency and confidence.
